Paying for College
The most important step to obtain money to pay for college is to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) OR the California Dream Act (if appropriate). If you are unsure which is the one for you, ask your counselor.

Essay:
Tips: Read your essay aloud to yourself or someone else, make necessary edits, and then request an English teacher proofread it with you; your final essay should be flawless.
Essay Part 1:
Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
AND
Essay Part 2:
In addition to the above, on a separate page, write a paragraph discussing what you see yourself doing immediately after high school as well as your long-term goals.
Two letters of Recommendation
The process to request a letter:
1-2 weeks before you need it, ask (don’t assume!) the your intended letter write to please write a letter for you. If they say yes, provide them with your completed Brag Sheets to assist them in discussing how wonderful you are.You need 2 letters (Letters are limited to one page each):
1- from a high school teacher
1- from another adult (not family)
Senior Brag Sheet (English) or Senior Brag Sheet (Spanish): You fill this out about yourself.
Make a copy, complete, then give to the person you are asking to write a letter for you.Family Brag Sheet (English) or Family Brag Sheet (Spanish): Your family member fills this out about you.
Make a copy, complete, then give to people you will be asking for letters of recommendation.Do not include Brag Sheets in scholarship applications. The role of the Brag Sheet is to help the letter writer know more about you.

This is an extremely competitive award; recommended top 10 ranking; 3.75+ GPA.
To be eligible for:
High School senior students preparing to graduate who attend either a Mendocino or Humboldt County high school. The Company reserves full discretion in determining qualification of school.
Timely completion of the application process.
Meet all requirements for entrance into a four year college or university. Students who enroll in 12 or more units a semester or quarter (9 units must be graded; not credit/no credit) will receive 100% of their semester/quarter scholarship.

Mendocino Coast Environmental Scholarship
To be eligible:
Have minimum 3.0 GPA
Have completed at least one science class in addition to that required for graduation
Planning on entering a two or four-year accredited higher education institution.
Career goals should relate to:
Communicating, interpreting, and researching preserving nature’s wonder by way of seeking degrees in environmental science, forestry, wildlife and fisheries biology, parks and recreation, park management, environmental law and public policy, environmental engineering, natural resource planning, environmental art/writing and similar environmental areas.

Rykken and Scull LGBT Memorial Fund
Invites all students, who have demonstrated outstanding support
for the LGBTQAI+ community at their school or in the community at large, to apply for a scholarship.
To be eligible:
a high school senior anticipating graduation in 2024 and are planning to enroll in a university or college, technical school, performing arts school or art college.
Persons who have graduated prior to 2024 or students currently attending one of the above-mentioned institutions are also encouraged to apply

Mendocino Coast Historical Society
Denise S Stenberg Memorial
Mendocino Coast high school seniors or students at the coast branch of Mendocino Community College who are taking history classes or have an interest in pursuing history as an educational goal.
Requirements:
Have a GPA of at least 3.0 and evidence an interest in history as an academic subject.
Proof of enrollment in classes will be required prior to release of scholarship funds.
For high school students, evidence of an interest in history (local or global) can be determined from the student’s application essay as well as supporting testimony from a school teacher or counselor.
Evidence of an interest in history can also be demonstrated by volunteering 10 hours with the Fort Bragg-Mendocino Coast Historical Society, serving as a docent at the Guest House Museum in Fort Bragg, assisting with maintenance of the Society’s archives, as well as other projects.

Soroptimist International Noyo Sunrise Shine Award
Criteria:
This scholarship is designed to help young women who are overcoming obstacles or facing barriers to obtaining higher education
Higher weight will be given to applications from girls seeking a career that can fulfill the Soroptimist mission to help themselves and other women achieve economic empowerment.

Mendocino Coast Recreation & Park District Scholarship
Who May Apply:
Applicants must be a high school senior graduating in 2025.
Students currently enrolled in college are not eligible.
Only children who have participated in a program or multiple programs at the Mendocino Coast Recreation & Park District are eligible to apply.
Children from Gualala to Westport who attend a public school, a private school, or home school within the districts from Gualala to Westport (MCRPD area map guidelines) and are high school seniors may apply.
The Selection Process:
The Mendocino Coast Recreation & Park District will award the scholarships. Selection is based upon the following five criteria:
1) Financial need
2) Demonstrated scholastic ability
3) Community involvement and leadership in MCRPD programs and participation
Sports participation with the understanding that these activities build character and leadership skills, teach strategic and analytical thinking, and promote goal setting and teamwork.
4) Your determination to succeed.
5) a two part 500-word essay.

Mendocino Coast Safe Space Project
“Roy Mora Memorial Scholarship”
The Mendocino Coast Safe Space Project (MCSSP) is a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to
creating safe and inclusive environments for LGBTQIA2S+ communities, students, and allies. We believe LGBTQIA2S+ youth are vital to society.
For applicants:
We invite you to share your story and your aspirations for life after high school. You may submit your responses through video recording, audio recording, art piece, written essay or other alternative means. While there is a written component to this application, please know you can submit it via video or audio if writing is not your preferred style. We strive to accommodate all types of learners and understand that traditional applications do not meet everyone’s strengths. The Neva Cannon title is in honor of her excellence and perseverance as a Fort Bragg grammar school educator and first principal of Redwood Elementary. She was also a Native Daughter Member.

Mendocino Coast Jazz Society
For a student who will be pursuing further education in music, and has an interest in Jazz.
Prepare a cover page for the Mendocino Coast Jazz Society Scholarship.
Write a brief cover letter explaining your scholastic and, especially, your musical activities; also discuss in some detail your financial needs for college.
If not already in your essay, write a short paragraph about how Jazz has affected your life, and what part it might play in your future.
Photocopy application page, resume, essay, and letters of recommendation from your FBHS scholarship application.
Add a transcript.

Paul Bunyan Days Association
The Paul Bunyan Days Association has proudly prompted forestry and ecology in Fort Bragg since 1939.
This scholarship for High School seniors intending to study Forestry or related field, or anyone currently enrolled in such courses.
Requirements:
Write a brief essay outlining why you have chosen this field of study and what courses you will be taking to meet the graduation requirements of the Degree you are pursuing.
In addition please include any experience working, volunteering, or otherwise being involved in this field. Please remember to include your contact information.
Assemble all of the documents in the same order as your FBHS General Scholarship Application and replace essay #1 with new essay.
